America's Good News: Sunday, October 18, 2026

From American history

In August 1951, the New York Yankees wanted a veteran arm for the pennant race, so they sent $50,000 to the Boston Braves for pitcher Johnny Sain and tossed in a young right-hander named Lew Burdette to sweeten the deal. Six years later, the Braves had moved to Milwaukee, and that throw-in met his old team in the 1957 World Series. Burdette won Game 2. He won Game 5, 1-0. Then, with ace Warren Spahn sick with the flu, he started Game 7 at Yankee Stadium on two days’ rest and threw another shutout, 5-0. Three complete-game wins, a 0.67 ERA, and Milwaukee’s first World Series title. The Yankees got their veteran. Milwaukee got the last laugh. In America, the throw-in can still win the whole thing.
